ECB Raises Growth Predictions For 2010

The European Central Bank (ECB) has adopted a more bullish stance over its projections for growth within the Eurozone. The ECB has revised its growth forecast for this year and now believes that the region will show an increase of between 1.4 and 1.8%. In 2011, the bank thinks that the region will post growth figures within the range of 0.5 to 2.3% – they’ll probably be right on that call since the range is as broad as a church door.

The ECB has continued to keep interest rates at the 1% mark as widely predicted. The rate has now been on hold for 16 months and is expected to remain at this level until into the New Year. T

Friday marked the last day’s trading in August and also the first anniversary of these articles. All of the markets ended the month lower than they were when it started. In Europe, the FTSE made 0.1% last week but fell by 2.5% over the month, closing at 5201.6, up 6% on the year; the CAC lost 0.5 %  last week, contributing to a fall of 5.6% over the month to stand at 3507.4, falling 5% on the year to September; the Dax ended the week down by 0.9%  and lost on 4.9% during the month to close at 5951.2, but it made 7.9% over the year.

Germany Leads European Q2 Growth

Almost like the end of year school report, European economic growth reports have been trickling in recently. Whilst the epithet “Could do better” can be applied universally, given the state of the global economy and the benchmarks set by the previous year’s results, they provide some interesting information. At this stage, data is provisional and may be revised up or down.

Top of the class is Germany which produced growth figures of 2.2% for the period from April to June; a record for the post re-unification period. Japanese Authorities Monitoring Yen Situation

As we reported yesterday, the Yen has been appreciating against the Dollar recently.

In fact, the Dollar hit a fifteen year low against the Yen on Wednesday of 84.72 to the Dollar. The Japanese wouldn’t be drawn on the subject of market intervention; the last time they did so was in 2004. However, they intend to monitor the situation and will talk to other nations about what can be done (if anything) about fluctuations in the stock and currency markets.
